What Is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a procedure that uses a liquid chemical solution to peel away the top layers of the skin. Dead, rough skin is removed, and once it grows back, it is softer, undamaged, and smoother. Chemical peels are used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration, textural irregularities, and scars. The level or intensity of the chemical peel varies, from light to deep, and relates to how deep into the dermal layer it penetrates. The deeper the peel, the more significant the results, but it requires a more intensive recovery process.
What Are the Benefits of a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels are a longstanding non-surgical treatment for facial aging concerns. Because they are non-invasive, patients can benefit from a shorter recovery period compared to surgery or certain laser alternatives. Additionally, chemical peels are a very customized treatment, ranging in depth, intensity, and the type of concerns they address. Patients can even purchase certain light chemical peels to perform at home. Some benefits of a chemical peel include:
- More cost-effective than lasers or other resurfacing treatments
- Quick results depending on the strength of the peel
- Non-surgical
- Mild to moderate discomfort
- Manageable recovery
- Can be repeated if needed
- Ideal for a variety of concerns and patient demographics
Who Is a Candidate for a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels are ideal for a variety of skin concerns and, therefore, can be beneficial for patients of all ages. Certain deep chemical peels can be extremely effective at removing layers of skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, making them ideal for older patients who do not want to undergo facelift surgery. Alternatively, peels are commonly used to smooth out acne scars and hyperpigmentation, proving beneficial to younger patients.
However, due to the varied nature of the peels, each with its own active ingredients and specific areas of focus, it’s important to determine your candidacy by making an appointment with your licensed aesthetician to discover which peel is right for you. Chemical peels are not safe for pregnant or breastfeeding patients, those who are allergic to any of the ingredients, or those with active skin lesions.
Call Designer Aesthetics & Med Spa today at (832) 891-9938 to schedule a chemical peel consultation with one of our experienced aesthetic providers and learn which peel is right for you.
What Are My Chemical Peel Options?
Chemical peels can be light, medium, or deep. During your chemical peel appointment, your aesthetician may apply a light topical anesthetic for your comfort, then they will apply the peel over your treatment areas. The peel is left on the skin for a certain amount of time before it is wiped off.
- Light chemical peels remove the outermost layer of skin (epidermis). They can treat fine lines, acne, uneven skin tone, and mild dryness. A light chemical peel treatment can be repeated every two to five weeks as part of a mild preventative skin routine.
- Medium chemical peels remove the top layer of the skin and upper portions of the middle layer of skin (dermis). Medium chemical peels are used to treat wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven skin tone. They can also be repeated to reach desired results, but sessions should be spaced out to give the skin time to heal.
- Deep chemical peels remove skin cells on an even deeper level. These should only be administered by a licensed professional and typically require some form of anesthetic. Deep chemical peels can be used to treat deep wrinkles, scars, and precancerous growths. They do not need to be repeated and require a more intensive recovery period.
ZO® Skin Health
At Designer Aesthetics & Med Spa, our technicians use ZO® Skin Health professional-grade chemical peel products. ZO® Skin Health has long been a favorite skincare line for aestheticians and plastic surgeons, as the dermatologist-founded company prioritizes results-backed products that blend luxury with cutting-edge scientific research.
Common Combination Treatments
As part of your customized chemical peel treatment and consultation, your aesthetic technician can recommend the best combination of wellness treatments to enhance your chemical peel results or help speed up recovery. Some potential treatments you can combine with your chemical peel include:
- Designer Drips: IV therapy with our Designer Drips, such as our Glow-Up Drips or our Recovery Drips, provides crucial hydration and nutrients that can help speed recovery and cell turnover.
- Wellness Treatments: Depending on the level of peel you have, PRP or PRF injections can be paired with your treatment to enhance your regenerative outcomes. By harnessing the power of platelet-rich plasma or platelet-rich fibrin, PRP or PRF injections provide growth factors and other nutrients to help the skin heal and bounce back even faster.
What Can I Expect From Chemical Peel Recovery?
All chemical peels work by removing the top layer (or more) of skin, allowing it to peel and slough off the dead skin cells to make way for the new, healthy skin underneath. As such, there is always a period of recovery involved; however, the intensity and length of this period vary greatly depending on the patient’s natural healing response and the depth of the peel.
Immediately after your chemical peel, your technician will put a soothing, lightweight moisturizer on your skin as well as some sunscreen. Your skin is going to be very sensitive and will need to be protected from sun exposure anytime you go outside. Be sure to wear SPF every day, and reapply as needed. Additionally, refrain from using harsh cosmetics and skincare products until your technician says you can.
Generally, patients should expect to go through a period of peeling or scabbing in the treatment area. This can take anywhere from one week (lightest peels) to one month (deepest peels). No matter the case, it’s important that you refrain from touching your skin and picking or peeling off the dead skin or scabs, as this can cause scarring.
Additionally, you may experience some facial redness immediately after your peel, which can persist for a few weeks into your recovery; this is perfectly normal, and once your skin has shed, you may safely resume wearing makeup to cover any residual redness (per your aesthetician’s instructions).
When Will I See My Chemical Peel Results?
Each patient is different, as are the peels. Full results often take some time to become apparent, but this also depends on the skin concerns being treated and the depth of the peel. A general rule of thumb is that lower-level concerns like light skin dryness can be seen and felt immediately after your session, while others, like acne scarring or deeper wrinkles, take longer to appear as the skin must go through its full recovery process.
Your aesthetic provider can give you a good idea of when you can expect your results (and after how many sessions) during your chemical peel consultation.
How Much Do Chemical Peels Cost?
Your chemical peel treatment will be tailored to address your specific concerns and aesthetic goals. Therefore, the cost of your chemical peel will depend on the specifics of your personalized plan. Your technician will provide you with an accurate cost estimate during your consultation.
